The pitter pattering of structured Kathak steps measured out to mellifluous strains and beats of Indian musical instruments will reverberate in Houston, USA, this September 22, when Padatik Dance Troupe, will present a unique musical dance drama entitled, ‘Yakeen Ka Safar' ('Journey of Trust'), during the annual cultural festival of 'Foundation for Children’s Cancer Research and Support' (FCCRS), a non-profit charity organization based in Houston.
This dance-drama scripted by Mumbai-based theater director and producer, Salim Arif, an alumnus of National School of Drama, New Delhi and helmed by Keka Kar, Director of Virtuosi of Performing Arts, is inspired from Rabindranath Tagore's celebrated opus, 'Kabuliwala'.
Souvik Chakraborty, the dance lead and choreographer, who has imbibed Kathak from Pt. Birju Maharaj amongst others has found a scope, owing to Kabuliwala's conversation with Mini (a character in the play), to amalgamate this Broadway-style musical with the song, dance and cultural tradition of Kabul and inducing it with an 'Arabian Nights' themed fantasy segment.
Somnath Chakraborty, the music director will be effecting an aesthetic meld of classical music and Bollywood's popular songs to synchronise with the Kathak steps.
Once there, the team will further collaborate with several talented children from Taylor High school, Houston for the final showpiece.
The only rue - the discerning Calcutta audience will not be privy to this salubrious endeavour. But hopefully they can stage the same at Padatik centre once they are back.
